For our final exhibition this year we studied mental disorders and illnesses. We were able to pick our partners but we were assigned disorders. The disorder my partner and I had to study was Bipolar Disorder. The first thing we had to work on was writing a case report that included the symptoms, history, research, treatment and statistics for the disorder. The reason we began with writing a case report was because we needed to become more familiar with the illness. After writing the case report we were asked to write a short story that had to have a character that has our illness. Writing the story was fun because we were able to make it realistic. Halfway through the project in art we began to create an art lesson that had to revolve around our illnesses. All of the lessons had to be made for people who have our assigned illness. My partner and I researched what was the most helpful kind of art therapy for Bipolar people and we saw that pattern drawing was the most commonly used kind of art therapy. So then we decided that drawing patterns on stones would be a great idea because it's very pretty and we thought it would be nicer than painting a flat canvas.
Throughout this project we were able to really explore our illnesses by doing research. I learned all about the history about bipolar disorder and deeper facts about bipolar disorder. Also how it can be treated and how people get medicated for different levels of bipolar disorder. I really liked how bipolar disorder was one of the main disorders that were able to have art therapy for help, because I felt that our project really applied to the disorder. Another thing I learned throughout the project was doing side research to show that art therapy is actually helpful for people who suffer of bipolar disorder. Another great part about this project was having guests come talk to us about art therapy and how it helps people because it shows that it is efficient. The guests that came to talk to us didn't just talk about one illness in particular but art therapy as a whole which is what really made it helpful for everyone.
For our exhibition we displayed our project for other high school students. Then we also went to another school to display our projects. I feel that this exhibition went pretty well because there were a lot of people who were interested in our booth not just for our activity but because other people feel that bipolar disorder is important to know about. It really seemed that people cared for the kinds of statistics we talked to them about. People would also be pretty shocked when we answered their questions not because they didn't think we knew what we were talking about but for the reason being that there are high statistics for the amount of people who have BP. I also enjoyed our activity part of the exhibition because people began painting as they got to the booth and while they painted we talked to them about Bipolar Disorder which just fit in a great time frame.
